AU Character Workshop
Character Workshop
Welcome to the Underground! This post is a permanent AU workshop where you can discuss the character(s) you're considering applying, get feedback on your character's AU background and establish pre-existing CR with players already in the game. The aim is to help you figure out what to write in the background section of your application and to give you a starting point for building CR when you join the game. Alternatively, we also have a Discord channel where you can do the same thing. Feel free to pop in for a chat. Before you start, have a read through the FAQ, species and factions. These will help you to think about what role you would like your character to play in this supernatural world.
You can use this post to:
• Share your ideas on how you'd like to adapt your character's background to the game.
• Ask questions and request feedback on your AU plans.
• Work out potential shared history with other characters.
Use this handy form to get started:
Player name:
Character name:
Canon: Or put "Original" here if you're playing an OC.
Species: Say which species you're considering! Or ask for suggestions.
Faction: Say which faction(s) you're considering! Or ask for suggestions.
AU summary: Here's where you can give a rundown of your thoughts so far, including a summary of who your character is and their AU background.
Notes/ideas/questions etc: This is your opportunity to ask for feedback! Is there any pre-existing CR that you'd like to establish? Are you looking for ideas on what role your character could play in their faction or what rank they should be? Do you have some cool ideas for what you'd like your character to do in the game that you'd like to share. Whatever you'd like to hear current players' thoughts on, ask it here.
Play with me: Link to your test drive meme thread, or anywhere else you'd like to test out your character!
Please note that posting about your character here is not the same as reserving and there is no guarantee that any advice you are given here will be accepted in your application. Nothing discussed here is guaranteed, since not all prospective players will submit an app or be accepted into the game, while others will app without having commented to this post.
If you have any specific questions that you would like to check with the mod, please refer to the FAQ where you can ask any questions.
Happy planning!
For current players

Desmond Miles | Assassin's Creed
Desmond is sort of an odd case in his own canon because his story acts as a framing device for the meat of 6 or so games -- as a descendant of Assassins, he gets kidnapped and forced to relive the memories of his ancestors with a device that taps into his genetic memory (doesn't really work that way, but you know, it's a video game) to help locate where certain important artifacts that could change the course of history have been hidden. As the games progress, it turns out constantly spending what feel like hours or days in your ancestors' heads does funny thing to a poor guy's brain; Desmond's mind begins to fracture, seeing things in the real world that shouldn't exist, and at some point he straight up goes catatonic. Eventually, after many shenanigans, he ends up sacrificing himself.
Not exactly stuff that makes for easy translation into an urban fantasy AU, though there are elements of that I'd like to pull out of that!
The early, pre-game part of his background is easiest to adapt:
- At 16 ran away from home, an 'off the grid' Assassin commune in the desert. By now, he's in his 20s.
- He became a bartender in the city (in canon it's New York, in game it could be London) hiding his past and pretending to have little knowledge of the supernatural.
- Unhappily, despite his resolution to live an ordinary human life, he's discovered he has powers that make that quite impossible, and who he is also makes him of interest to harmful individuals.
What I'm currently undecided on is if I should leave it at that (it leaves it most wide-open for any future canonmates to come in or if I should incorporate any actual game events). My current tentative plans for his history after that:
- He was kidnapped for some ritual that involved summoning/channelling the spirits of his ancestors. However, he was rescued by a small cell of other Assassins (a much diminished order) and brought to London.
- ??? Stuff happens that either gives reason for him to be separated from them or break off???
- Having found a safe haven (for now) Desmond applies himself to trying to better understand 1. what the hell is going on, 2. gaining skills that would actually be useful for figuring that out.
- At this point, having been forced to relive the memories of at least one ancestor, he has slightly more fighting prowess than he did before.
The reasoning behind him being a witch is primarily because it has the skillset that most readily adapts itself to things like seeing ghosts, learning new things, etc. I can see him pushed to Hillingdon if he ends up leaning more to the distrust of authority side of him (he has plenty enough of that) and in keeping with wanting to be on the lowdown. On the other hand, Circle Daybreak could offer him a safe haven (he hopes) and also teach him to wrangle his newfound powers, while potentially providing conflict between his personal morals and what the faction's goals are. His personal motivation as a character is more 'please leave me alone' but hitching him to the greater cause of a faction provides him something to (reluctantly) work towards while he tries to sort his own life out.
Anyway, any thoughts/commentary/suggestions are more than welcome. \o/ I'm not attached to specifically using the 'Assassin' lore at all and can happily substitute them for either NPC groups or factions existing in game if that makes more sense.

THIS WOULD ACTUALLY WORK, truth be told. Depending on how far removed you want Desmond to be from actually Assassin stuff, we could have a lot of fun with that!

I know I'd definitely like him to catch on to the whole 'wait there are other Assassins!?' situation in London so I'm definitely interested in getting him involved! I'm leaning to keeping him from America (hey, they somehow end up in Italy between the AC1 and AC2 games so weirder things have arguably happened) which is a convenient excuse for his general ignorance of what's going on.
My main questions atm is whether 1. hidden blades are still a thing, 2. weird alien artifacts (although I suppose the better analogue here would be ~enchanted fae objects~ or something) are still something the Templars are after. :|a I'm happy to bounce ideas for maximum flexibility because a lot of this is still very nebulous in my head.

2) Yes, yes they are.

more seriously though, Evie's player has established the Brotherhood as a Thing in the wider world, so I'm sure there's stuff there you can work with. And honestly I think you've got a pretty good outline there too. You could also play with the ~*~muscle memory~*~ of the Animus with the fauxstergo rituals having the side effect of giving him a better understanding of magic (that he never wanted a bloo bloo)
WRT factions, I think Hillingdon is probably more fitting for Desmond overall (since it kinda offers that space to just... be himself and do things he wants to do at his own rate,) but Daybreak offers some interesting potential; his moral dilemma like you mentioned. And you can move later on.
EDIT: I see Shea got here before me, so I guess you can tell she's down to clown.

Fauxstergo is a great word but YES that's pretty much what I was thinking with that too (poor Desmond, life so hard, etc). wrt factions, it is DIFFICULT because I can easily see him going into either and then making a switch later (either disillusionment with the Circle or 'Hillingdon is great but they're not really helping me stop going crazy'). Decisions, decisions.
Solas | Dragon Age
Character name: Solas
Canon: Dragon Age
Species: Fae
Faction: Unseelie?? Possible outcast??
Notes/ideas/questions etc: Could definitely use help especially from those canon familiar to bounce ideas off of/get suggestions from etc. Still playing around with a lot so I'm going to jot rough notes of where I think I'd like to go with AUing him (and I'm working with a potential Lavellan applicant on parts that may pertain to them):
-Originally was thinking Unseelie Court, but I'm considering an Outcast of the fae might fit better with his lore since it would be similar to him first waking up and not being at "full power" in canon
-Going to have him be an "older" fae (at least a few thousand years old)
-Something he greatly disagreed/disproved of happened in the fae courts that caused him to lash out and become an outcast (with enough conviction that he would risk his power + access to the Other Realm)
-Has been a
n unwashed hobowandering fae boy in the mortal world since then-Recently settles into London and tries to gain access to the Other Realm once more, ends up creating the key/anchor to his gateway there on Lavellan/Inquisitor's hand because they were in the Wrong Place at the Wrong time
-Thinking about AUing his focus as the fae object his power is tied to/being necessary to destroy first before he could be killed (if I read that right about those items!!)
Still trying to figure out potential powers for him based on the fae skill set and what he has access to in canon. I know if I try to do an outcast approach I'll have to be more careful with his magic levels, so suggestions there are also welcome! I had initially been playing around with the idea of a spell that would allow him to pull people into the Other Realm with him when they were both dreaming (since the Other Realm sounds similar to the Fade in canon), but I know that wouldn't be possible if he were an outcast instead.
I've mostly got loose ideas I'm trying to turn into coherency. I will probably hit up the discord channel when more people were on, but I wanted to get my vague thoughts written down somewhere.

Given that I've been playing it as the current Unseelie king and queen are generally disinterested in the mortal realm, perhaps that could in some way be related to Solas' tantrum? Either that he didn't like how they turned their back on the mortals, or (maybe more in keeping with canon?) the previous ones were just Too Mean and Capricious with mortals and he had some hand in removing them. There's definitely a lot of room for ~*~court intrigue~*~ and I don't think it's something any of our previous fae players (myself included) have really touched on.
ALSO I think that power is actually really good, even as an outcast, in that it could really be a driving force in him trying to get back to the Other Realm. Less because he wants to go dreamnapping people, but because there's this part of him that's so fundamental to who he is and how he understands magic that he's just totally cut off from. Generally it could be quite fun to play with the idea of him having been a really fucking powerful fae, and maybe now he's not much stronger than your average witch now he's cut off from the Other Realm.

A power where he can only go into the Other Realm while sleeping but is unable to physically interact with it would drive him to frustration to want to actually go there. That would be a lot of fun to play with. I'll need to figure out what power level/scaling back I need to do to make him more fitting of the outcast role (since I'm not 100% clear on how few of the other fae powers he should have if he's been booted). His focus could be something he keeps around/hidden as a reminder of his former power in hopes of using it to unlock it again...
Thank you, this definitely helps!

Character name: John Constantine
Canon: Hellblazer
Species: Witch / Human?
Faction: Questioning
Notes/ideas/questions etc:
First premise: John has known about the Underground for a while, but has never been there. He normally avoids this kind of thing, since he is not exactly dear to supernatural creatures (taking a piss on the King of Vampires' corpse, anyone?). One day, however, he turns the wrong corner and gets trapped here. He assumes he's got trapped by a foe, but it's something we have to work on.
Second premise: I can't really fit him into a faction. Circle Daybreak seems to be the obvious one, since he is a mage, but he isn't really the "healer" type. Since I play him pre-canon, I was thinking about getting really pre-canon, and get him in as a human who wants to learn magic. Dark magic, that is, since he wants to resurrect his mother.
Other ideas are welcome!
