Faolan wonders what that must have looked like to anyone else in the cafe. Whether they will understand how over-affectionate and inappropriate that gesture is or whether they'll wonder what his problem is that he hadn't returned the gesture. He wonders to himself whether they know or realize that he doesn't know this woman. He feels for a moment like standing up and shouting it at them but it's perhaps only because that will cause more of a scene that he doesn't. (Also because he knows that it's a ridiculous thought as well, but that's neither here nor there.)

He stares at her as she sits back down across from him, as if nothing's done. He's still got his hands clutched, white-knuckled on his coffee mug, but the only thing he manages to do is open and close his mouth, stuttering a few words at her and failing to form a full thought before he forces himself to regroup. And when he does still all he can manage is, "Who are you?"
