Nancy's right. It's hard for Eponine to stomach the thought of someone paying for her, even such a meagre amount as a quick meal. It's hard even to accept it in exchange for Nancy's life.
But, she's hungry, and accepting now is easier than trying to attack someone else.
"I'll pay you back, Madame." It's the only way she can let herself give in. Will she keep the promise? Probably not; it will be one of those that comes and goes, like the money that passes through her bony fingers as quickly as running water. It feels a bit better for now though, to give in with that promise between them. She's betting Nancy knows anyway, that she won't.
"But now you live here? With the vampires? I shouldn't think that was safe: I am surely not the only girl who does not wish to spend her money on a meal? How is it you live, Nancy?"
