Test Drive Meme: November 2015

HAPPY HALLOWEEN.

Welcome to the Underground test drive meme! This is where you can try out the AU version of your character, start some potential CR and get a feel for the world of the game. Choose your character's species, read up on the available factions and you're ready to go. Put your character's name in your subject line when you post, tag out, and have fun!

Note to current players: Activity in this meme counts as game canon! So you can use it for activity check. If you end up playing anything that you can't or don't want to use as game canon, it's fine to ignore it. (In that case you shouldn't submit it for activity check.)

Here are some prompts to inspire you:

1) GHOST TOWN. (31st October) Ghosts, it's your chance to shine! Whether you want to or not, actually. Even humans are more sensitive to ghostly activity tonight, so be careful where you choose to make your haunts.

2) BEHIND THE VEIL. (31st October) Even the faintest disturbance of magic could disrupt the veil between worlds tonight. Will you stumble into the Other Realm? Or will they find you? It's all blurring into one...

3) SAMHAIN. (31st October) Known to the public as Halloween and to witches as Samhain, tonight is the night when all manner of supernatural creatures come out to play and the humans will be none the wiser. Of course, if you're a witch, tonight is much more serious business. The veil between the worlds is thin, and magic can easily reach through the cracks.

4) FANCY DRESS. Or you could dress up and go to a Halloween party, where you can revel in what you are without suspicion. Just make sure you stain your costume with fake blood, not actual blood, mm'kay?

5) ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK. There's something behind you...

6) HOUSE OF HORRORS. Okay, whose stupid idea was it to venture into a haunted house tonight? Really, you're every horror movie trope waiting to happen. Hope you brought a comfortable sleeping bag.

7) BONFIRE NIGHT. (5th November) Remember, remember, the 5th of November. Gunpowder, treason and plot. Bonfire Night is a long-standing tradition in the UK, commemorating that time back in 1605 when Guy Fawkes and his co-conspirators tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament. (They failed.) Tonight, light a bonfire, set off some fireworks and watch your guy burn. Lovely, isn't it?

8) CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE. Anything goes.

He laughs awkwardly, a little flustered by the way Reynard is touching and complimenting him both, and drops his eyes to Lily. Lily looks up at him and twitches her ears questioningly. Don't look at her, she doesn't know what to do about this either.

"No, I'm fine thank you. I --" He hesitates, gestures vaguely and realises he has no idea where to go with what he was trying to say. Something about muscle, he thought, and about how Reynard would have had to put a lot more force into it. He trails off, shrugs and re-pocket his phone. "I'm fine, I've had worse. Some of it from my friend here."

Lily, the picture of innocence who would never tackle a person, decides since they aren't going anywhere she will sit down to watch the proceedings.

"Then I'll have to try harder next time, won't I?" There was always something a bit strange about someone with any hint of proper magic wearing quite that open a face. On the other hand, he was clearly associated with the Seelie and so Reynard had once been and that made this a lot less baffling. Some simplicity helped with a proper Seelie mindset.

Dealing with the dog while in this form was awkward. He'd hardly ask what name he'd given to her, animals didn't think like that. Maybe later on he could do this properly, but for now it was just easier to focus on him. "They call me Reynard." He wasn't expecting much in the way of recognition, he seemed young. "What about you?"

Reynard. It's not a common sort of name, uncommon enough to give him pause, but then neither is his. He lets out another awkward sort of huff of amusement ('next time'? What was that supposed to mean?) and flashes Reynard a smile.

"Lancelot," he offers, one hand dropping to scritch at the dog's fur just under her jaw. She leans into his leg at the touch, eyes closing in pleasure. "And this is Lily," he adds, because whatever Reynard's feelings on animals and names Lancelot always introduces his dog by default. He feels it'd be rude to leave her out.

"What a pleasure to meet you." There had been a definite pause at his name, hadn't there? Enough to give Reynard that little thrill of possibility. Maybe he was still recognizable enough, even around these parts, to make things a lot more interesting. What he'd need to know was how strong a presence fae really had and, honestly, what better way to get a read of that then with someone so earnest?

"Excuse my insolence, I'd presume you've better things to do than to humour someone who's just not capable of simply walking past you. But if you don't, I'd like to make it up to you. Coffee?" The real challenge would be to make obvious that this something other than a romance movie meet-cute story, without giving away the thoughts he actually had, vague as his plans were as of now. "We could talk about fairy tales."

Is...

Is this man trying to pick him up?

Lancelot blinks at him a moment, mouth slightly open before he manages to remember to close it and rally himself. The added comment throws him further -- talk about fairy tales?

"I..."

Then something makes him hesitate, because perhaps -- well, it might be a clue. It's either charming nonsense or a clue, and Lancelot can't exactly tell which. Which means he's either about to accidentally accept a makeshift date or take a hint to discuss something faction related.

He hopes he isn't wrong.

"Well, I suppose I might have a few minutes," he finishes finally.

Ah, the lines between idiotic and precious had always been very close together, hadn't they? Reynard felt no urge to pet the actual dog, but he rather wanted to give Lancelot's head a pat for all of this. He did wonder what conclusion he might have arrived on, but he could really roll with either option, although one clearly had a higher entertainment factor.

"You honour me, Lancelot." Reynard smiled brightly as he turned on his heels so he could walk next to him. He had no idea where the nearest coffee place was, but this was London and these days that meant it couldn't be more than a minute away. "So tell me, what is it for you? Long walks on the beach, watching the sun set? I suppose we've already done getting caught in the rain." Whether this conversation would be useful he was starting to doubt, but it was entertaining without a doubt. He watched to see any more signs of panic on Lancelot's face before just continuing his questioning in the same tone of voice. "Seelie or Unseelie?

This had become more about teasing him than actually learning anything, but Reynard knew himself well enough to not be surprised.

Lancelot had just begun to walk in the direction of the nearest café, all the while wondering what on earth he'd gotten himself into, when the last question makes him grind to a halt again. He shoots Reynard a slightly alarmed look then frowns. Well, he supposes that does clarify the 'fairy tails' comment.

"Neither," he supplies quietly, which is true as far as he is concerned. He may have been raised by the Seelie court, but he doesn't belong to them. He's a member of the Night Council now, of Daybreak, but doesn't consider himself part of the fae courts. They did abandon him back here, after all.

"There's a wise choice." Interesting too. Reynard could make a few educated guesses already, but there was no need to be hasty. There might be some need to acquire money between now and actually paying at a café, depending on Lancelot's willingness to pay for him. Somehow Reynard wasn't too worried. He put a hand on Lancelot's shoulder to gently nudge him into walking with him again. "Don't you worry about nothing, I'm just in the habit of being more curious than I have any business being."

He shoots Reynard a slightly uncomfortable sideways look at the way he touches him again, and somehow the man's reassurance makes him yet more wary. Don't you worry about nothing feels like exactly the sort of thing someone you should worry about would say.

"What is it you want?" he prompts cautiously, allowing himself to be coaxed into walking but slowly.

Whether he noted the discomfort or just because he would have anyway, Reynard pulled his hand back and offered a shrug instead. "Nothing yet. I just got here, I know nothing of the situation and I don't enjoy ignorance. At least not in myself."

In others it was a treasure. "The difficulty is to figure out how to fit in without offending in the process, isn't it?" That said Reynard stepped forward to open the door to the coffee shop and let Lancelot walk in first. "After you."

He listened to the song being played inside the shop. Revival of the nineties everywhere. "Good music. What bands do you like?"

Reynard appears to be quite content to simply carry him along despite his misgivings, so it is that Lancelot finds himself walking in despite himself -- still more than a little wary of his new companion. Good music, he prompts, and Lancelot simply continues to regard him with a look of utter bewilderment. What bands does he like?

"Forgive me," Lancelot begins slowly, "but if it is information you are after I fear my taste in music will not help you -- and perhaps I may not be the best help myself. I know some, but I have only been... aware of such things myself a few months. I fear I may be catching up myself, some of my memories are... cloudy."

He coaxes Lily closer, closes his fingers through her collar to stop her stray too close to any tables that smell tempting. She tolerates this easily enough, not too inclined to do as such anyway despite her obvious curiosity.

Too bad. Taste in music could work like carbon dating for several creatures, but Lancelot didn't appear to want to make it quite that easy on him. On the other hand, maybe he actually had. It depended on some other factors, but he was slowly at least getting a hint of the picture. "That has got to be rough. Sorry about that. I've failed in most other areas at one point or another, but at least I've always had my memories."

Reynard stepped to the side when a man passed them, but he moved just a little too slow, he still brushed against him. Enough to solve the issue of money, should Lancelot not be feeling all that charitable. "What will you have? In all honesty, I've never taken to coffee. Hot chocolate for me."
