Potential CR Planning

Thinking of joining the Underground? Come tell us all about it. This post is for prospective players to discuss their characters' AU backgrounds with canonmates and other characters, and to establish pre-existing CR (character relations). The aim is to help you figure out what to write in the background section of your application and to give you a starting point for building CR when you join the game.

You can use this post to:

• Share your ideas on how you'd like to adapt your character's background to the game.
• Ask questions and request feedback on your AU plans.
• Discuss potential shared history with canonmates and build in cross-canon CR.

Please note that nothing discussed here is guaranteed, since not all prospective players will submit an app or be accepted into the game, while others will app without having commented to this post. After the next round of applications have been processed, there will be a follow-up CR planning post for accepted players to confirm initial plans, make changes, and look for new CR.

This post is intended to be an open discussion between current and prospective players, but I'm happy to answer any mod questions you might have too. Our next test drive is due to be posted tomorrow, Saturday 29th August, so look out for that!

Rupert Giles | Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Hello everyone! I'm considering Rupert Giles as a Daybreak witch with an interest in eventual vampire turning.

Personality | Father figure; scholar of the supernatural; loyal, steadfast, defends humanity at all costs. Delights in eccentric occult stuff.

Canon Background | Trains a ragtag band of kids to fight monsters. Had a rebellious black-magic phase in his youth. His family goes way back in the Watcher's Council, which combats and covers up the supernatural.

AU Background | Respectable Daybreak + Night Council family. In his youth: defected and started a scraggly little Midnight-aligned coven, summoned fae, played in a punk band. Now respectable and pretty quiet. Might also make a good Redbright teacher, librarian, or recruiter. Huge distrust for vampires; doesn't mind werewolves.

Looking for | Scholarly friends, coven friends, civil acquaintances of all species, old friends from his rebel phase. Teenagers who need a mentor figure. Baby witches who need an actual mentor.

My name's Rona and I'm over at ochrona for more rapid-fire plotting! If potential castmates turn up: I am so open to everything. (Without castmates, he'll be vaguely pre-canon; there's no one important to him, no strong goals, fairly static lifestyle-- hence an interest in setting him up as a reluctant, morally-conflicted vampire somewhere down the line.)

Seriously though, such a perfect character for the game. I would love to see a slayer sometime too. I'm Athena, I play Mab (obviously) the Lady of Air and Darkness in the Unseelie court. If you'd like him to know her that would work for me. She's one of the big bads for the first half of her own series (where she is the Unseelie Queen) and is kind of 'summon at your own risk' but I'd love for them to know one another if you want. She's not much of a 'friends' person so much as an allies or acquaintances person. Or someone you might owe favors to that might make your life miserable.

This would be interesting-- Giles has been known to call on 'summon at your own risk' types when it's time for desperate measures. Possibly he encountered her during some apocalypse crisis situation in the past, so they'd recognize each other as potential allies if it came down to it-- 'this person kept their end of bargain and is as trustworthy as can be expected' type of thing.

Though I'm interested to hear how she'd call in a favor, because that could happen in the future.

As fair warning, owing Mab a favor for something big and apocalypsy would have likely resulted in him nearly dying to return the favor. But yes this would be awesome. Mab holds up her end of bargains well.

So far her favors have been pretty benign, but the bigger the thing you ask her for (ie: saving someone's life) the deeper in debt you'd be. She generally aims for suborning someone into becoming hers. Curing someone near death would basically require their agreement to complete loyalty to her. (Becoming her vassal, I built it into her ability to heal as a requirement.) She has Faust trying to find a way to key the doorways to the other world so she can control who can pass through the ones she makes. She might ask them to assist with a territory claim, or to defend a territory for a certain period of time. To get information for her at their own risk etc.

In that case, maybe Giles witnessed someone else calling on her to solve a problem-- maybe fairly early into his return to the Daybreak side of things, when his acquaintances were more mixed-- so he doesn't owe her anything, but there's the potential to make a deal if a game situation ever gets desperate enough. This is all terribly vague, but that way he could know her by reputation and she could recognize him as an acquaintance witch, which is something to start from. It could be interesting to get him tangled up in a favor to her, down the line.

Yes, she has been spreading around seeds waiting for them to bear the fruit of favors asked. So this fits in wonderfully. I would love to get him in over his head at some point in the unknown future when you really want him to suffer.

Oh my gosh hi more Daybreak people and BTVS! Hello reasons for waking up at 7 AM in the morning to watch the new episodes during the weekends. \ o /

I'm Melly and I'm playing warmheartedly aka Clara Seville, a friendly but ghostly security guard in the Redbright Institute, over at the game but I'm planning to also bring in this guy too in the next app around on the 1st! His name is Matthew Brown and he's a kind of grumpy but well meaning guy running a pub as he tries to raise his magical baby girl by himself.

If Giles been in London since birth, he could have either known the Brown family when Matthew's parents were still alive so he could be a welcome regular at the pub if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Hello! Regular at the pub would be spectacular, and I also look forward to having him meet Redbright people, because I haven't quite decided his involvement yet but what is Giles if not swarmed with teenagers, really.

That's cool to hear! It's a really nice and welcoming place for everyone of all types -- Even werewolves and vampires but they've learned long ago to not start a fight in the pub since it got blessed by a fae in the past to be neutral grounds meaning no use of magic or power there that isn't fae magic! Think of it as a power negated area.

Clara will be happy to meet up with him. She's all about defending the students and the faculty since she believes in the cause of helping everyone. It kind of helps her granddaughter, and only relative/anchor, was a student there and attends night classes at the moment after her graduation.

Giiiiiiles, omg. I've wanted a Buffy cast here since forever. :D I'm Skull, and I play a doofus ghost who used to be a Midnight witch before she got murdered, and a morally dubious vampire.

Focusing on Aradia, though, since she's been around London more consistently - unfortunately she'd probably not have been around for his rebellious phase (whoops, bitty!ghost), but I could see them having bumped into each other at some point? She was pretty loud about being a medium before she died, if that's at all helpful. Plus there's always her pointed Bad Life Choices if that's more relevant.

ARADIA YES HELLO Giles will... be unhappy with her Midnight alignment etc etc look where it got her, which is a shame because I think they'd be adorable as witch and ex-witch. Maybe something will make them work together, someday? I like the idea of them bumping into each other when she was alive and more cheerful, though nothing immediately springs to mind-- I'll think on this.

I have actually thought about bringing you castmates but Nepeta is ridiculous, no one should be exposed to Gamzee, and my occasional urge to pick up Kanaya hits the stumbling block of 'but I would have to review.'

Ironically, her being Midnight did nothing to cause her death (so far, I'm keeping it pretty ambiguous) beyond encouraging Bad Life Choices - unless someone picks up past CR with her as the murderer, I'm keeping it pretty close to canon. Hi, Vriska. But she did poke around for any-and-all magical info for a good while there - maybe they bumped into each other that way? Their CR potential would be adorable, so it's definitely worth thinking on.

---oh my gosh castmates. I'm not going to lie and say I wouldn't appreciate anybody, because I'm honestly making grabby hands at even the idea, but it's honestly up to you if you'd feel comfortable playing them! Canon reviewing Homestuck is pretty daunting even at the best of times - I tend to just brush up on the feel of Aradia's voice for AU games, rather then her full canon details, if that helps.

Makes sense! Good god I can see Vriska as a shitty monster hunter, can you see Vriska as a shitty monster hunter, who wouldn't app that. Also: I will admit that Nepeta running around as a shapeshifter in Hillingdon is a pretty great thought, and my Kanaya urge is intense, so we'll see what happens! It'll be Giles to start with but if you want to tdm it up I'm at least pretty recent with the catgirl.

He definitely could've run into her when she was poking around for info-- if it was before she joined up with a Midnight coven, maybe he gave her some spellbooks, and if it was after, maybe he answered some questions but tried to shoo her off the darker stuff?

Lance is a member of Daybreak! He's a Meta Human who just wants to help protect all the healingy balance-y witches since he lives in their land anyway. He's also a part of the Night Council, as a guardian!

He's ICly new to both, I had him join in game time rather than being appd in as already in the faction, and is very much Jon Snow when it comes to supernatural goings on so I don't doubt he'd be happy for a friend to help him explain what happened after he's already thrown himself into the problem and gotten hurt.

He's also a policeman on top of this for normal human things too. He doesn't appear to believe in the concept of free time.

Heyyy a Daybreak friend! Giles's family goes way back in the Night Council and he's not completely on board with all their approaches, but he'd like Lance. Giles will gladly be the exposition friend backing him up after he throws himself at something dangerous. And possibly the one long-sufferingly patching him up, too.

Very good! c: Lance always needs someone with a little booksense and patching up skills around, and honestly he'd probably be interested to hear Giles' opinions! After all, he's new so he's still learning!

Hello! I'm Teresa and I play Faolan here, and I feel like the pair of them could have some shared backstory perhaps? Faolan is a hunter who's been doing his own thing for ~10 years or so, ever since his family was killed by vampires in Ireland.

Giles could either have encountered him when he was younger as one of those who was probably a little too old to have been one of his kids and a little too embittered to have been taken under his wing. OR depending on where he was 10 years ago, Faolan might have known him instead from his darker years -- running into him when he bought some enchanted items off of him during his black magic phase maybe? It could be fun to have them run into each other now, years after the fact, and be like "WEREN'T YOU THAT GUY..."? :')a

Oh man I would love "WEREN'T YOU THAT GUY" but tragically Giles stopped being ~punk rock~ when he was... 25ish, and he'll be 40-45 here. But he was probably still a bit low-ranking and disgraced when Faolan met him, so he was still of a mind to sympathise with the embittered loner thing, and they might've shared info or something a bit.

ALAS and Faolan's really only 28 years old so that's...a little before his time then, HAHAHA. But Giles could have run into him when Faolan was just starting out in London, then? His whole family was killed by vampires when he was 18 so he ran off and became a hunter himself and had a pretty rough time of things, maybe Giles could have tried to help him out a couple of times? Even though Faolan was probably angry and bitter and didn't really end up being all that grateful for the help at the time SORRY GILES. He would have been without a family or support system or without a home so. He would have been a hunter, not a witch, but he would have been a good trial for an attempt at what Giles has going on now maybe? Before he got too ornery and disappeared off into the streets of London or something HAHA???

HOKAY so this is Nancy from Oliver Twist. 18-year-old hooker with a heart of gold. Except this time, she's also a Circle Midnight witch, cofounder of Shadow Coven and willingly lets vampires bite her for a bit of cash, because it's a pretty decent business. She always needs father figures, given her own lack of one that isn't the worst.

Wow this sounds like several things Giles would disapprove of LET'S DO IT. He will be charmed by her against his will, they can reluctantly end up relying on each other and get that mentor-type CR rolling, I can absolutely see this happening. Watch him accidentally adopt all the Midnight kids.

If Giles has been around London for a while, and during his rebel punk years, if he was into summoning fae and dealing with their awful things, he'd probably have heard of her guardian. Creepy old fae named Fagin who has a host of kids basically at his command that run around and pick pockets. And sell drugs. And other terrible things no child should be doing.
