Potential CR Planning

Thinking of joining the Underground? Come tell us all about it. This post is for prospective players to discuss their characters' AU backgrounds with canonmates and other characters, and to establish pre-existing CR (character relations). The aim is to help you figure out what to write in the background section of your application and to give you a starting point for building CR when you join the game.

You can use this post to:

• Share your ideas on how you'd like to adapt your character's background to the game.
• Ask questions and request feedback on your AU plans.
• Discuss potential shared history with canonmates and build in cross-canon CR.

Please note that nothing discussed here is guaranteed, since not all prospective players will submit an app or be accepted into the game, while others will app without having commented to this post. After the next round of applications have been processed, there will be a follow-up CR planning post for accepted players to confirm initial plans, make changes, and look for new CR.

This post is intended to be an open discussion between current and prospective players, but I'm happy to answer any mod questions you might have too. Our next test drive is due to be posted tomorrow, Saturday 29th August, so look out for that!

MATTHEW BROWN | ORIGINAL CHARACTER

What up what up everyone. Once again it's me, a Melly! I'm planning to bring in Matthew Brown this app cycle and these are the things that I have planned out for Matthew. Compared to the last time I brought him up, he's changed quite a bit!

RACE Human. Or temporary meta human since he's been 'blessed' by his daughter which we'll get to in a minute. FACTION Either Redbright Institute or Seelie Court. Leaning towards the latter since he'll be closer to finding Lyra and giving her a piece of his mind for the whole 'lol surprise a baby bye' she pulled. PERSONALITY Matthew is rough around the edges, blunt and dour at times, but he means well and does his best to keep a level head at the face of everything that's happening to him. He doesn't like to think he has a temper on him despite having some Irish blood in him -- thanks, mom! -- but that doesn't stop him from trying to finish someone else's shit if they start it on him. While he thinks of him as being nothing but a normal and boring guy due to his self-deprecating nature springing up on him now and then, his devotion to his family and friends are almost legendary since they mean the world to him and he does his best to protect them to the best of his abilities. Hurt someone he loves and he'll start a fight with you let's do it punk he'll go for a round. BACKGROUND While his family has had brushes with the supernatural from time to time, Matthew never had a personal encounter himself until he got involved with a Lady of the Seelie Court some time ago. Much as he loved her, he and the fae, known currently as 'Lyra Lore' to the world, were opposites in a lot of ways. She didn't exactly endear herself to him post-breakup when she simply left their child on his doorstep a year after their break up in late 2014. Now he finds himself suddenly being a single father to a wonderful little girl and he's trying to get the hang of raising a baby. It's kind of tough when she happens to be a powerful metababy who has interesting powers that involve making her father 'invulnerable' in a sense to harm. When not suddenly dealing with a strange new world, he's the owner of the Watering Hole, a popular pub that can be found over at Haringey meaning he's kind of used to weird shit going down every now and then. He's been born and raised in London his whole life but he's traveled to New York now and then during vacations so he could have run into characters from there in the past if you're interested! More info can be found here: APPLICATION. PLANS FIGURE OUT WHAT HIS CHILD IS OH GOD. I mean he loves her to bits but cHILD. Now and then try to track down his ex-girlfriend, Lyra Lore, to get answers out of her. Mainly the 'why didn't you tell me?!' variety. Have him learn about Redbright! He'll probably be going there ASAP the moment he learns about its connections to the other side, so to speak. … Probably ask for more staff and employees to work in his pub because yes. It'll be nice if he had company at his place. He promises he pays well and everything. :|a POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS Do any Seelie and/or Unseelie character want to know Lyra Lore, the mother of Margaret, in their history? She's a powerful figure among the Seelie due to being around for so long and is a known fixture in court thanks to her beauty and grace. Though she disappeared for what they would consider a long period of time for her -- a total of three years or so -- she hasn't explained her whereabouts during her absence besides to a few select figures she trusts. Your character is welcomed to hear gossip for the reason of her staying there in the human realm for so long along with the whispers of her child in the other world and the potential power she has too if they want. Now back to Matthew: Regulars at the family pub would be nice! He's often the bartender since he's the only one left around who knows how to make the Brown's famous Irish Coffee. He's there for you if you need a shoulder to cry on, a ear to vent to, or someone who is willing to say, 'Yeah I think you had enough to drink.' Employees too like mentioned above? A-Any Redbright connections out there willing to run across him and help him out with 'how do i baby' angle of his? Or will anyone help for that matter? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

I'd be happy to have Heiji have heard of Lyra and/or have met Matthew -- and on that note, did you want to stick with the CR from the test drive thread? Maybe push it forward so it's more recent?

Heiji would also be happy to look out for Matthew if he gets involved in Seelie court stuff :V!

I would be happy to keep the CR we had in the test drive if you like. Which means she's seen Lyra Lore before but doesn't know her well.

Mab will help. But I don't know if that will be good for him or the child. :) Because she'll collect for the favor.

Rupert Giles | Buffy the Vampire Slayer

Hello everyone! I'm considering Rupert Giles as a Daybreak witch with an interest in eventual vampire turning.

Personality | Father figure; scholar of the supernatural; loyal, steadfast, defends humanity at all costs. Delights in eccentric occult stuff.

Canon Background | Trains a ragtag band of kids to fight monsters. Had a rebellious black-magic phase in his youth. His family goes way back in the Watcher's Council, which combats and covers up the supernatural.

AU Background | Respectable Daybreak + Night Council family. In his youth: defected and started a scraggly little Midnight-aligned coven, summoned fae, played in a punk band. Now respectable and pretty quiet. Might also make a good Redbright teacher, librarian, or recruiter. Huge distrust for vampires; doesn't mind werewolves.

Looking for | Scholarly friends, coven friends, civil acquaintances of all species, old friends from his rebel phase. Teenagers who need a mentor figure. Baby witches who need an actual mentor.

My name's Rona and I'm over at ochrona for more rapid-fire plotting! If potential castmates turn up: I am so open to everything. (Without castmates, he'll be vaguely pre-canon; there's no one important to him, no strong goals, fairly static lifestyle-- hence an interest in setting him up as a reluctant, morally-conflicted vampire somewhere down the line.)

Seriously though, such a perfect character for the game. I would love to see a slayer sometime too. I'm Athena, I play Mab (obviously) the Lady of Air and Darkness in the Unseelie court. If you'd like him to know her that would work for me. She's one of the big bads for the first half of her own series (where she is the Unseelie Queen) and is kind of 'summon at your own risk' but I'd love for them to know one another if you want. She's not much of a 'friends' person so much as an allies or acquaintances person. Or someone you might owe favors to that might make your life miserable.

I'm Melly and I'm playing warmheartedly aka Clara Seville, a friendly but ghostly security guard in the Redbright Institute, over at the game but I'm planning to also bring in this guy too in the next app around on the 1st! His name is Matthew Brown and he's a kind of grumpy but well meaning guy running a pub as he tries to raise his magical baby girl by himself.

If Giles been in London since birth, he could have either known the Brown family when Matthew's parents were still alive so he could be a welcome regular at the pub if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Giiiiiiles, omg. I've wanted a Buffy cast here since forever. :D I'm Skull, and I play a doofus ghost who used to be a Midnight witch before she got murdered, and a morally dubious vampire.

Focusing on Aradia, though, since she's been around London more consistently - unfortunately she'd probably not have been around for his rebellious phase (whoops, bitty!ghost), but I could see them having bumped into each other at some point? She was pretty loud about being a medium before she died, if that's at all helpful. Plus there's always her pointed Bad Life Choices if that's more relevant.

ANNIE CRESTA | The Hunger Games

Hi guys! Shea here with Ms. Annie Cresta from the Hunger Games. I threw her at the last test drive, but I think I'll throw her out again. Anyway, I'd be apping her as a Hunter.

Canon Background Well Annie is the Victor of the 70th Annual Games who went mad after watching her District partner get decapitated. She's from a Career District, so she went into the arena a trained fighter. She's an incredibly strong swimmer, as was showcased in the (evidently very boring) finale of her games when the arena flooded after an earthquake.

AU Background Originally from Inishmoore, Ireland, Annie was raised by her grandmother and fisherman father. Her father, as it turned out, had left the hunting business after he met his wife, and after her death was determined to stay out of it. Annie however wanted to hunt, and so her grandmother brought her to where she herself had learned, a small private school known as The Fourth District, that trained those who wanted to how to protect themselves, and others, against the supernatural. This was awesome. Until a nest of vampires got word and descended upon it. They killed everyone inside. Except for Annie, who, after doing as much damage as she could to the insurgence, hid amongst the dead. She's extremely emotionally fragile as a result, suffering strong PTSD, dissociative episodes, and periods of regression alongside severe depression. So she's a barrel of fun, really. She's currently in London with her grandmother, FOR REASONS I HAVEN'T DECIDED YET. probably something something redbright institute something something.

Personality Shy and quiet. Surprisingly morbid. Extremely capable fighter. Often appears childlike in how she expresses herself after the attacks. She hates people thinking she's incapable or stupid, and has a vicious self-loathing streak. Also the best swimmer you'll find around here.

Looking For Gosh, fellow hunters, vampires she can hate, vampires that were there when The Fourth District was attacked. I'm not even sure if this is going to work, but why not!

MIRAI KURIYAMA | KYOUKAI NO KANTANA

I'm totally ganking this from Melly up at the top it was too good of a format /sob Anyway, HI ITS KIM. And I know I put two other babies on the test-drive last time BUT I'm actually really attracted to bringing Mirai into the game.

PERSONALITY
Shy and generally anxious. Mirai isn't a big fan of confrontation - which is a point of contention given her job of hunting monsters (even in canon, yes) - but that doesn't stop her from being an efficient hunter. She really dislikes situations that are deemed 'unpleasant' by her own standards. She doesn't really try to rock the boat or try to change the world, mostly because she's fatalistically realistic and knows she's just one person. If she owes you a favor, you can be sure she'll do everything she can to pay it back.

AU BACKGROUND
Mirai is from a family of meta-humans that also function as monster hunters. Their blood is considered cursed and unclean by other hunters because of their ability to mold and control it outside of their own body. Their blood also carries corrosive properties, making them weapons unto themselves. Because the family was too powerful, the whole of them were exterminated - excluding Mirai. She was taken in by another family of hunters, though still excluded and locked away because of her abilities. She did, however, make a friend in the eldest daughter of the family. One day however, the girl was possessed by a ghost and Mirai killed her in self-defense. She was transferred to England into the custody of the Hillingdon Clan with the stipulation that she continue hunting supernatural creatures.

I'd love to have Mirai strike up a deal with a Fae to make her powers less...crazy. She has a ring in canon that helps her limit them (it can be removed for ultimate godtier) so I'd like to do something with that.

Generally i'd just like to have her go hunting vampires, werewolves, fae, witches errthang while still trying to make friends with the notcrazy! ones.

KARKAT VANTAS | homestuck

hello everyone! i've been sitting on my hands in regards to this game for so long & now i finally think it might be time to roll up my sleeves and get stuck in. before i do that, though, i'd like to share some ??? and !!! with you. my name is miro, and i'm considering bringing karkat vantas into underground. it's him or naruto uzumaki (yeah, i know, right?) so i think i made a healthier lean.

personality: bad-tempered, easy to annoy, easily frustrated.. and yet somehow staggeringly emotional, compassionate and caring. loyal, steadfast, determined and practical. intelligent. leader-centric. takes no shit.

canon bg: karkat is an alien in his canon who will scream until things go his own way (which they mostly do not) and who spends a good portion of his time trying to make sure everyone's problems/arguments/murderous tendencies aren't getting in the way of the end goal or getting his friends killed. fun and games ahoy, really. he's a mediator. and everyone's agony aunt.

au bg: human. the most reluctant and untutored medium, if you can even call him that. afflicted against his will with sensory talent and party-trick level abilities he comes out the other side a flashing neon sign for those of the Other Side, but with very little experience to actually help them out.
he's a med student in the making - uni probably - he's good with helping alive people. there's not much he can do with dead people and his trial-and-error psychic abilities.

possible connections: he reluctantly (he makes a fuss but probably really wants to be helpful) assists any wayward whisp that might ask him for help when he makes eye contact. he works in a hospital clinic as reception staff in his down time. he's terrified of most of the shit he sees, and he doesn't like blood. he's a fucking cliche, he knows, thanks. he's also had five hundred side jobs bc shit is expensive. and he's loud.
so failing everything, characters might have just heard him around as opposed to having seen him.

Sollux Captor | Homestuck

Yo, I'm Pinnku and I'm considering apping this nerd right here to the underground. Sollux is a bit of a tragic snowflake and as one of his major canon mates is in game, I want to gauge just what level of angst/emotional turmoil I'll be working with when plotting him out (all levels are A okay 8D of course!).

Personality | Sarcastic, irritable and diagnosed Bi-polar, Sollux generally vacillates between crippling self depreciation and intense (but not unwarranted) hubris. He's good at what he does and knows it and want's everyone else to know it, apart from the times when he doesn't and would rather everyone just go away thanks. All that aside, Sollux does actually care for his friends and often goes above and beyond to help and please them, most times to his own detriment.

Canon Background | He's an alien with intensely powerful telekinetic/psychic abilities and not only can he hear the screams of the soon to be dead, he also has the ability to see the varying paths of the future. He is not happy with any of the above and most of these powers lead to him dying on two separate occasions, but not before being blinded and having his teeth knocked out. (In canon he's also at least half responsible for Aradia's death, a fact that quite literally haunts him for a good majority of the comic.)

AU Background | He's a massive computer nerd and a very accomplished hacker, so he'll be involved with anything that illegal or unsavory online, simply because he can and it's incredibly lucrative. He'll most likely be attending university and be working some shitty Tech Support job, either at the Uni or independently. He has a tendency to hermit a lot, but can/will be drawn out if he's needed. Comes from a single parent family (his dad) and will more than likely have a twin brother (Mituna Captor) and be struggling to not fry his own brain with his meta powers like said brother. If I were to transfer his canon abilities directly, he turns into a bit of a hot mess and rate about a 4 on the magic power scale. (Not entire sure /how/ powerful one can be at the start of the game?? and unsure where I want him to be with any of his powers just yet.)

Possible Connections | Aaany of his canon mates and other meta humans, possibly? He can be a little antisocial at times, but also /needs to know/ things, so he'll want/have connections because he knows a guy that knows a guy.

(Edit: also, to answer your question - you can be decently powerful at the start of the game, it just varies on a case-by-case basis! Aradia started at a 4, if that helps.)

Personality | Playful, delights over bad puns, cheerfully brutal in her love of hunting, paints with the blood of her kills. Snoops in everyone's love life.

Canon Background | Raised by a literal cat; half-feral kid hunting monsters in the forest; friendly with everyone; ships her friends together. Chat-roleplays as a cat, disregards all mockery. Relies on [soulmate] to keep her from flinging herself at trouble.

AU Background | Raised by a sometimes-literal cat; half-feral kid hunting vampires and fae in rural areas; trusts no one but tries to get along with everyone. Except fae and vampires. Spends about half her time as a mountain lion, to the point of nearly being seen by humans. Wears a pelt alongside normal clothing, since unlike clothing it transforms with her. Prrrobably half of Hillingdon has seen her wearing nothing but that and it covers no relevant areas.

Loves adventure and exploring; completely disregards faction borders.

Looking for | People to keep her out of trouble; friends to invite her on adventures; friends to get stuck on her adventures, which probably end in blood; people whose romantic lives she can snoop in; people who are deeply exasperated by her but she just keeps coming; friends to play pretend/explore/be animals with. I don't know how else to describe Molly except as practiced. She's a sex-domination therapist in her own canon and she's very clever about what she chooses to show and what she doesn't - Molly is a great actress. Behind that Molly is a nurturing person, someone who knows how to manipulate and often does it for reasons that are kind. She loves teasing people she's attracted to as well.

AU BACKGROUND
Because of her job and her personality, I thought vampire would be perfect for her. I was thinking, because of her classic looks and personality, that she would have been made in the Victorian era from a middle class family when she was hired by a mysterious person to be their housekeeper and she was turned. Obviously, I'm willing to adjust her story to whatever comes my way!

I'd like to get her established as important to the Islington Nest, maybe get her on the Night Council - who knows!

LOOKING FOR
A maker and vampire children! I don't mind having her be the sire of somebody already in game, either! Also patients for therapy (regular or sex tbh), pls!

Probably loosely affiliated/allied with the East End pack, but not a committed pack member due to the fact that he doesn't live there (yet). He's a big lonely dude who definitely isn't cut out for this lone wolf junk.

Personality: Easy-going, gentle, slow to anger - but when that anger boils over you're in serious trouble, avoids his problems like the plague, cautious, a complete geeky nerd who loves everything cute and fanged, something of a nerd elitist.

Canon BG: Can best be summed up as: Tavros has the worst luck in the world and the worst taste in friends. He was paralyzed, had one of his besties die tragically when she tried to get revenge, blinded a friend due to mind control, then got pushed around for a while before deciding enough was enough and getting stabbed for it. Then! He was a ghost. And maybe kind of dated the person that paraylzed and killed him, before realizing that she was a jerk and broke up with her, raised a ghost army, then immediately kind of reverted back to just being a second in command when someone bossier came along.

AU BGPossible Connections: People he went to highschool with, werewolf friends/enemies/frienemes, friends from all species and definitely negative cr. I love. Negative CR.

Plans: First and foremost, I'd actually love it if he got his ass kicked for not genuinely committing to any faction and basically just skirting the territories trying to not cause problems. That can't last forever.

***** I'm still not 100 percent on who is all involved in this and how it goes down and all that bc it's referencing a huge part in canon for him, and it's always more fun to use cr than it is to just random npcs for terrible things.

Methinks we should hammer out backstory details for if you decide to app, given Pretendy Murder Funtime Games are currently on record as having happened (parts of it have been hammered out between me and Sollux-mun already) and I'd love having your opinion in the mix too.

Gaspard Laurent - Original Character

So, Lynn here, offering a morally bankrupt French vampire turned on the eve of the French Revolution that gave way to the Reign of Terror.

His wants are basic. Food, company, and personal advancement.

He is political only so far as it benefits him. His only loyalties are to himself. He won't seek rank, but he will strive to be important. Know the people and secrets that will make the world turn. Really, all he cares about is being considered indispensable, which often involves carefully playing all the sides of a conflict to have an in with the winner.

I'd love to discuss possible broodmates -- his sire was a former member 9 the Catholic Church from before Protestant ism was even a thing. Or people he's crossed paths with before. Or someone(s) to run into, plot with, etc once in London.
